The Fellowship of Christian Athletes engages coaches and athletes to grow in their faith and sport.
It’s a window. A very small couple of weeks during the first part of July where Bama coaches can get away from the office. No practice. No recruiting. No film. Some head to the lake – others to the beach – and some to the mountains! But, this summer a number of Bama’s coaches and staff used their window to go with Bama FCA and coach football in Germany!
It all started about 4 years ago when Coach Cramer was introduced to Coach Mario Campos Neves at the Nick Saban coaching clinic.
Coach Mario, a German national and employee of Mercedes-Benz, spends his free time in Germany coaching American Football in Stuttgart. Two years ago, Coach Mario was invited by Coach Saban to spend an entire season with our football program. He took a sabbatical from Mercedes and became a part of our lives.
After seeing our student-athletes return from mission trips to Costa Rica and Panama, where he knew we coached football, he asked, “When you are going to come help me in Germany?” the rest is history.
So we began to assemble an All-Star team for the mission, including a number of coaches from South Alabama! The team from Bama included:
Former players like Javi Arenas, Wes Neighbors, Hoss Johnson, and Jake Long who are now coaching were joined by long-time Bama Head Athletic Trainer Bill McDonald, former Bama middle distance runner, Eddie King, Bama FCA Director Coach Cramer, and a number of Alabama High School coaches.
Our scripture verse for the week was Matthew 5:6 which reads, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Our mission was to let Germany’s coaches and athletes see our faith through the way we coached the game and give them a reason to ask us “why?”
During our time in Germany coaching “really good football” we were privileged to touch almost 300 lives on the football field and in the coaching clinic that we hosted. The television station in Munich did a feature story on our trip (We would include the link, but it’s all in German!)
